Title page of Bishop Lucius Henry Holsey's autobiography. Holsey was enslaved to Richard Malcolm Johnston, a professor at the University of Georgia. Holsey learned to read and also became a Methodist during his time in Athens. After emancipation, he went on to help found the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, as well as Paine College in Augusta, Georgia.
